FROM THE SERVANT GENERAL
OUR THEME FOR 2019
(Part 23)
THE WORK OF THE GENERATIONS TO COME – 2
February 5, 2019
Today’s psalm: Psalm 22:26-32
We are families on mission, and our mission is to reach all families in the world, to bring them to Christ in accordance with God’s plan. “All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord; all the families of nations will bow low before him.” (v.28). Remember that all are children of God, though many are estranged. All are beneficiaries of Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross, though many do not know or have not embraced this salvation. All are to be under God’s dominion, though they do not know the reality that “kingship belongs to the Lord, the ruler over the nations” (v.29) and so are under the dominion of the evil one. So God wants to bless not just our families, but all families.
Our mission is until the Lord returns again. Thus we need to look to the future generations. This refers to our descendants as well as the generations of peoples of the world. For us, we look certainly to our own families, in accord with Joshua’s proclamation: “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” But we also look beyond, to our children and our children’s children, and so on down the line. “And I will live for the Lord; my descendants will serve you.” (v.31). We commit our generational line, to live Christ and to share Christ. “The generation to come will be told of the Lord” (v.32a). And these future generations of ours will be the ones to continue with our mission, “that they may proclaim to a people yet unborn the deliverance you have brought.” (v.32b).
Families on mission. “As for me and my descendants, we will serve the Lord.”
